Order of fat loss

While searching though some of the popular fitness forums, I came across a post which listed the types of fat detailing which were the easiest to lose.

from easiest to hardest:

Visceral fat
Deep abdominal fat
Upper superficial abdominal fat
Lower superficial abdominal fat
Hip and thigh fat

It should be noted however, that since most men don't carry hip and thigh fat, the lower superficial abdominal fat ends up being the difficult to get rid of for most males.

Prior to puberty, little boys and little girls have essentially identical fat patterns.

What happens hormonaly basically determines an individuals fat patterns. After this period, research shows that fat cell patterning is essentially 'set' at that time. So the typical male is testosterone dominant, while the typical female will be estrogen/progesterone dominant. This determines what pre-adipocytes (basically dormant baby fat cells) develop to store fat after that. So girls typically get hips thighs and boobies, boys get fat on their stomachs.

Essentially, if you developed hip and thigh fat during puberty, for whatever reason (and note that there are some odd shifts in fat patterning happening these days; I'm seeing more and more girls with visceral fat) you developed fat cell in your hips and thighs, which act just like a typical female's lower body fat in terms of getting super lean.

Using Diet Patches

Using Diet Patches

More than 75% of the population fights with issues that relate to weight loss. It may be a few pounds or a case of obesity but either way there is no magic bullet for curing obesity or weight gain. But using diet patches seems to be the latest hope for an easy solution to the problem. The diet patch is the latest and greatest craze to make it to the weight loss market in recent months. And it certainly is the most attractive diet plan to come along in ages.

There are a variety of different diet patches on the market. Some claim to work as fast as within 24 hours which is very impressive. Others claim results in a couple of days or a week. Almost all of them share basic ingredients and all deliver those ingredients the same way.

Using skin patches is not a new idea. Many drugs, contraceptives, and stop smoking remedies are delivered slowly through a time release skin patch. It has been proven that medication is absorbed extremely well through the skin. It has now become quite a common delivery system for prescription drugs and alternative treatments too.

So using a patch to deliver diet supplements should not be such a surprise. There are several different manufacturers using diet patches to delver a mix of minerals and herbs that are suppose to help you shed those extra pounds.

Garcinia, Guarana, and Fucus vesiculosus are common herbal ingredients that speed up the metabolism. Yerba mate is a substance like caffeine which works by speeding up the metabolism. Chromium picolinate is used to balance blood sugar levels.

Green tea concentrate has become a popular choice in dietary supplements so it is not surprising that it is now being used in diet patches. It is thought to metabolize fat more efficiently and to also speed up metabolism.

For best results apply the diet patch directly to dry skin in an area where there is a thin fat layer. For example the upper arm is often a good spot. The area not only needs to be dry but it also needs to be hairless, so if needed shave the area.

Once the patch is on, the person does not have to worry about getting it somewhat wet such as in the shower, however swimming is too wet. Replace as per the manufacturers directions that came with the patches or as directed by your doctor.

It is not the diet patch itself that can be the problem but rather the way a person perceives the purpose of the patch. If the person believes the patch is all that is needed to shed those pounds they will be met with disappointment. Whether diet patches or diet supplements are being used they must be combined with a good exercise program and an understanding of food calories including what a person can or cannot eat. All of these elements are an integral part of a good weight loss program.

If the calorie intake is higher than the calorie burn it will not matter what product is being used or what delivery mechanism is being used, the program will not be successful. Combine exercise, and counting calories with the use of diet patches and those pounds will begin to melt away.

Burn Chest Fat and Get Rid of Those Man Boobs

Burn Chest Fat and Get Rid of Those Man Boobs

Chest fat or man boobs is an embarrassing condition for most men. Weight training by itself will not solve the problem. To burn chest fat you have to lose the extra weight, that is, reduce caloric intake..

Cardio activity, such as running or speed walking, is helpful in keeping a tone to your muscles, as well as using up those fat layers by burning those calories. Exercise classes will add some variety and pretty much accomplish the same thing. But don't expect immediate results, as it is your body that determines what areas it will burn off that excess fat first, and the chest area may be toward the end of that targeted list.

But don't give up! Over time you will see the results of lessening your caloric intake and burning the fat you already have through exercising.

But don't neglect your weight training. As the fat dissipates from your body, you will want to tone up he muscles that are still present. The bench press and bench flye exercises work great!

And since we are talking about man boobs and the chest muscles, adding push ups to your routine can be a terrific help, as push ups really concentrate on toning those pectoral or chest muscles.

To summarize: To burn chest fat and get rid of those embarrassing man boobs you should:

1. Reduce your calorie intake. Watch what you eat! It's the calories that add to the body fat.
2. Add some cardio exercises to your schedule to help burn the excess chest fat that is already there.
3. Add some weight training activity to help tone the muscles. Coupled with adding push ups, you will notice that your man boobs are disappearing!

Add the three steps as mentioned above to your daily habits and watch those man boobs disappear. You probably won't see an immediate change, but keep at. Change will come.

WLS Patients Take Too Long to Order Food: What's That About?

WLS Patients Take Too Long to Order Food: What's That About?

Families who dine out with their loved ones whove had gastric bypass surgery often complain the patient takes an unusually long time to order food. Rose, whose mother had gastric bypass about eight months ago asked, Whats wrong with her? Its so frustrating!

There are a number of reasons gastric bypass patients are indecisive when ordering a meal at a restaurant. Consider some of these:

Perhaps shes worried about getting sick dumping or vomiting. All WLS patients worry about getting sick in public.

Perhaps she has some unresolved emotional issues about leaving too much food on her plate. (Remember the clean up your plate threat of childhood and habit of adulthood.)

She may fear she wont like what she orders: to a bariatric patient taste takes priority over quantity.

Maybe nothing sounds good to her, in the early stage after WLS food can seem unappealing and even nauseating.

She may not be hungry, but doesnt want to offend you by rejecting your invitation to dine out.

Some patients in the early stage of living after weight loss surgery feel grief or loss for the foods they once loved gluttonously. She may be feeling loss seeing a menu of many things that she can no longer enjoy.

These things considered, is it possible to ask the family member if there is a specific reason shes struggling to order her meal? That may be touchy and her feelings are probably raw in this early phase of weight-loss, so be cautious.

Some bariatric patients I know look at on-line menus before dining out. They make a plan ahead of time and know what they will order and enjoy based on the very specific needs of the low-volume, high-protein WLS diet.

I believe Roses mother, and others, will gain confidence in eating out and ordering skillfully for their needs. It is important to be patient as the family member attempts to bust a lifetime of bad habits thus finding the way to better health.

How to Burn Calories

How to Burn Calories

Many people who choose to go on some form of diet have no idea what they need to do to burn calories. Burning calories is the only weight to lose those unwanted pounds. There are many things that you can do to burn calories every day. Below are some of the ways that you can burn unwanted calories to make weight loss that much easier.

1. Increase Your Metabolic Rate: Metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns up calories. If you burn off the same number of calories that you consume daily then your weight will stay the same. Therefore increasing your metabolic rate will enable you to burn off more calories than you consume daily, thus speeding up the rate at which you lose weight.

2. Build Muscle: Increasing the amount of muscle in your body will help you burn calories. For every extra pound of muscle you put on, your body uses around fifty extra calories a day. This is due the fact that muscle is metabolically active and burns more calories.

3. Move More: The more active you and the more you move around then you are sure to burn more calories than you normally do on a daily basis.

4. Eat Spicy Food: Research has shown that spicy foods, namely chilli, can raise your metabolic rate by up to 50% for up to three hours after youve eaten a spicy meal.

5. Aerobic Exercise: Sustained high-intensity exercise makes you burn more calories for several hours.

6. Eat little and Often: There are some evidence to suggest that eating small, regular meals will keep your metabolism going faster than larger, less frequent meals.

Are You Obese? What's Your Ideal Weight?

Are You Obese? What's Your Ideal Weight?

Are you obese? A lot of people wonder because the stereotypes in the media really get people thinking about their appearance and if they are fat or at their ideal weight.

The general definition of obesity is if you are 30 percent over your ideal weight. This is where most people would like to know just what their ideal weight is of course.

Your ideal weight is a subject of much hoopla to me (I'll put my view points on this after). Most doctors involved with obesity or weight loss deem ideal weight as " A body mass index (BMI) of 25 up to 30 kg/m2."

The centers for disease control and prevention list the following details for BMI and will let you see where your stand according to them:

Below 18.5 Under weight

18.5 24.9 Normal

25.0 29.9 Over weight

30.0 and Above Obese

So in order to know if you are obese you should supposedly know if your BMI is around 25 to 30 kg/m2. Lets figure out BMI then. Here is how you figure out your BMI by math: BMI = (Your weight in pounds divided by (Height in inches by Height in inches) all multiplied by 703

Do you have it done? Good! So where did you end up? Are you obese? Are you starting to freak out a little? Okay, lets break for a second. Take a breath and let me tell you the low down.

I am a personal trainer; you can see pictures of what kind of shape I am in on the website. I am five foot nine inches and 182 pounds. I am usually around 10-14% body fat. I have a BMI of 26.9! According to all the doctors and some fitness experts out there, I guess I must be overweight and close to obese!

So what's the deal then? Well like I said earlier, I have a little beef with BMI and obesity, as most people would quantify it. I think being over weight or obese should be gauged by your body fat percentage and not this ridiculous BMI. Let me explain why.

Well normal BMI readings are taking into account your whole body, bones, muscle, and fat. So even if you have barely any fat and can see your abs they think you are obese and not at your ideal weight, just like me. If you have a lot of muscle and little fat, you can still fail the BMI even if you are healthy and fit.

Now body fat percentage tests are a different story. The only thing looked at here is how much fat and muscle you have by percentages of your overall body weight. Obesity this way states that above 25% body fat for men is obese and above 32% body fat is obese for women.

If you come in on or around these figures, then you should get to work and apply some solid training and nutrition planning basics. Doing an actual body fat test will truly tell you where you are and where you should be because it is the fat amount and not the overall weight of a person that has detrimental health consequences.

You can get a body fat test done at any local gym or you can buy a cheap tester that will put you in the ballpark figure. Just make sure that you keep using the same method all the time, as you want to compare the change and not the actual figure. One method may differ from the other by as much as 3%. Small but still important if you are gauging all your hard work!

Weight Loss - 5 Quick Tips To A Healthier You

Weight Loss - 5 Quick Tips To A Healthier You

Along with being healthy, we all want to look as fit as possible. Sometimes this is can be a challenge. With so many different diet plans and foods available, it can be difficult to figure out what works and what doesn't. Well, there are still some old-fashioned ways to lose weight that have been tried and true for years now. These 5 tips will not only help you to lose those unwanted pounds, but they will also help you have a more healthy body.

1. Eliminate The Junk Food

This tip might not make you smile, but it will help you lose weight faster than any other thing you can do. Cut out the junk foods from your daily diet. These snacks only hurt your health and your body. They are chock full of carbohydrates, fats and calories. Try to replace the junk food with more healthy snacks, or bars.

2. Eat More Fruits And Vegetables

We have been raised as children to eat our fruit and vegetables, so why do we stray away from that the older we get? Eating all kinds of fruits and vegetables are a must on any weight loss plan. They contain essential vitamins and nutrients that your body needs along with fiber that are good for your digestive system.

You can eat as many of these foods as you like without having to worry about putting on weight. Fruits and vegetables contain very few calories.

3. Eliminate The Soda

This is another biggie for most everyone. The amount of soda consumption in the U.S. is growing every year. From what used to be a standard 12-oz can of soda has now become a 48-oz "big gulp". The sugars and carbohydrates soda contains can add several pounds to the average person.

And with soda it's not just the weight increase you need to be concerned about. It creates more cases of Diabetes than any other single factor. Your best bet is to add more water to your daily diet. Water is healthy for your body and it will give you a full feeling, allowing you to eat less.

4. Always Eat Breakfast

Never starve your body. Many people mistakenly believe that skipping breakfast will help you in a weight loss plan. This just isn't true. It will mess up your body and cause you to have cravings. Then, when you can't take it anymore, you'll start eating everything in sight. This just defeats your purpose. In addition, it's simply not good for your body. You should definitely eat 3 meals a day and you may want to consider eating 6. Yes, consider eating 6 small meals a day. The key is to make sure they are small.

5. Exercise

With any weight loss plan you will need to add in at least a little exercise. It helps to burn off those unwanted calories, which in turn lowers your weight. It also gives your body the energy you need and makes you feel good. Even if it's 30 minutes of walking, be sure to get some exercise.

These weight loss tips may be old school, but the bottom line is, they flat out work.
